New Album: ZhiYa (2018)
Opening the album with a really interesting Ambient Intro piece was a very suitable idea for this album, allowing the listener to sink deep into the mood of the album right from the start.
用一首十分有趣的氛围音乐来作为这张专辑的开场曲是一个非常合适的主意!它让听众从一开始就深深沉浸在专辑的氛围中。
Because the new album had been in the process of preparation for a period of over four years, each song conveys very different things, but you get the sense of waves of happiness (Waterfall III), melancholia (Karaken), the vicissitudes of the seasons perhaps, or that feeling of some sort of alternation between opposite or contrasting things (A.T.C.G) and so on throughout the album. When I first heard the 'WE WILL BE BACK TO SEA' album, I was immediately impressed with the bands ingenuity, variation and diversity that is even more evident on the new album, which shows the band have entered into a new phase of maturity. On all WeirdoRoom releases, you will find there is a duality of happy and melancholic vicissitudes present throughout their music.

I was absolutely blown away by the new album and I have to say it took me about 3 days to really listen and absorb everything that's going on in the album.

After checking with the band, I was even more surprised to discover what instruments were actually used on this album, because I was sure I heard Cello and Glockenspiel in there somewhere on this exciting new record. Apparently, they've incorporated Violin, Viola and Cello for the string sections and at first it didn't go smoothly when they recorded the strings, so they ended up Recording it twice over. They invited guest musicians to participate, who are students from their College Orchestra. At first, their understanding of the music deviated greatly from what the band initially expected. Being a Post-Rock band, obviously the musical approach is going to be quite different to Orchestra, so after a lot of communication and some tough rehearsals, they finally completed a high-quality satisfactory recording, especially on "Here is where we met" which greatly enhanced the track, thanks to the involvement and professionalism of these three lovely girls. Additionally the Rawap, from the XinJiang Uygur Autonomous Region which was used at the end of track 8,《西域春》 (Spring in Western), which imbued the piece with a stronger, more pronounced regional flavour.

The band had to learn how to apply the typical traditional Rawap playing method to the music, so that it could not only highlight the characteristics of the instrument, but also skillfully integrate them in a more experimental way that really works and as evidenced on the record, the final results sound really majestic!

Xia not only played the drums on the record, but also played the Harmonica and the Glockenspiel as well, so apparently she's quite a talented individual to have in the band.

Xia and Ming are originally from Urumqi, Chai is from Hami, Pei is from Beihai, and our Band Manager, Ghard (WangHaoLin) is originally from Inner Mongolia. so it's incredible to think how these 5 people from different areas of China united to form WeirdoRoom in Xi'An and the result has been the truly magical creation of some of the most glorious music to emanate out of the Chinese Post-Rock scene in recent years. This album was recorded at Timestring Studios in XIAN and Mixed by Jari Lindholm (from Seas Of Years, a fantastic Post-Rock band, from Sweden) What I like most about WeirdoRoom is that they sound nothing like any other Post-Rock band out there and they've successfully created their own totally unique indentity.
夏耘和马鸣来自乌鲁木齐, 柴艺超来自哈密,和裴天林来自北海,和我们来自内蒙古的乐队经纪人Ghard,很难让人想象这5个来自中国天南地北的人在西安因为怪人房间这个乐队组合在一起,结果就是那些魔法般的创作出的辉煌音乐展现出了近年来中国后摇的情景。这张专辑是在西安Timestring录音室录制,混音由Jari Lindholm操刀(乐队Seas Of Years,一个非常出色的瑞典后摇乐队)。我最喜欢怪人房间的一点是,他们听起来不像其他的后摇滚乐队,他们成功地创造出自己的独特身份。
The first time I ever heard of WeirdoRoom, they were playing in Shenzhen at B10 Livehouse back in 2015, as part of the 'FROM ASHES TO THE LIGHT Festival', organised by LiuQi (WearyBird Records/UnknownArt & Pest Productions) and now the band are Mid-Way through their 2019 China Tour, with Liu again which is great to see! In 2015, I didn't really know WHO WeirdoRoom really were and admittedly, when I first heard the band name, I actually thought they were a Punk band, so a big thank you to Daniel (Kong) from SpaceStation who really steered me in the right direction in discovering their music and getting to know the band on a more personal level. A big shout out to Liu, Rachel, Frances and everybody on the WearyBird Records/UnknownArt/Pest Productions team, for all their hard work in helping to promote the band, their fantastic new 'ZhiYa' album and the current 2019 China Tour! The new 'ZhiYa' album from WeirdoRoom has remained at the top of my listening playlist since it's 2018 release and continues to be one of my top favourite Post-Records together with the lovely new U137 record, 'Second Chapter'.

In my opinion,'ZhiYa' finds its success in its diversity and varied approach making the record a fresh listening experience each time you play or repeat the record. When I listen to this album, I usually play it on repeat, three times in a row, just to be able to enjoy and absorb the beauty and the details in the music. A refreshingly exilirating record! [9/10]
